HLC: I learn that you are offered a teaching job at some Universities. Please, tell us the details, such as what courses<\/strong>.
\nVTV: The company I work for, Training The Street, is the world’s leading provider of instructor-led courses in financial modeling and corporate valuation training to Wall Street investment banks, business schools, and colleges. I used to be an investment banker at Merrill Lynch and worked on transactions such the sale of the International Securities Exchange to Deutsche Boerse for $2.8 billion and the issuance of $3.4 billion of capital for US Bancorp. I try to teach my students the skills they’d need in order to work on transactions such as that, and this includes accounting, corporate finance, valuation, and financial modeling. HLC: What are the advantages and disadvantages?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: I love teaching so there are a lot of advantages. It’s a great feeling to say one little thing to a student that maybe struggling with a concept and then suddenly it becomes all clear to them. It is very gratifying to be teaching at some of the top schools. Also I try to make my classes a lot of fun so I do things most teachers wouldn’t like show videos and play music.\u00a0I meet interesting people too. For example one of my students in Qatar was a blood prince of the royal family, and he invited me over to his compound because I had wanted to see his pet cheetahs and we had a fairly traditional meal that included several entire lamb legs and fish that measured three feet long. We ate this all with our hands sitting on the ground while I listened to them argue about whether the Devil was made of dirt or dust or a magical substance. Unfortunately his brother had taken the cheetahs out to be cleaned so I didn’t get to see them.<\/p>\n

The disadvantages are that I work and travel a lot, but that’s also a good thing!<\/p>\n

HLC: Do you feel any discrimination from your students?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: I’ve taught in many different places ranging from Ohio to New York to London to Dubai to Beijing to Brazil and I have never experienced any discrimination. My students are the top performers from the best schools and as a result are very open and globally minded.<\/p>\n

HLC: When and how did you come to the U.S., at what age? What schools did you attend?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: I was born in Seattle and grew up there. My parents raised me the traditional Vietnamese way. I owe everything to them because of what they provided me, and also because they taught me self-discipline, which has been the key to my success. Beyond that, my family was very close and we always emphasized family values. My brother and I are best friends and we live together now in New York, and he was even a producer on my film. We also have a large extended family that I care about very much. This sense of community that was very important to me, even though now I live in New York where there aren’t many Vietnamese people.<\/p>\n

For college I had the option of going to an Ivy league college, but I went to Claremont McKenna College, a liberal arts school in California, because I wanted very small classes and to stay on the west coast.<\/p>\n

HLC: Can you tell us some of your experience when in college?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: College was when I first really opened my eyes to the world around me and realized the many possibilities available in life. Originally my parents had wanted me to become a doctor or study computer science, but I found that I was interested in other things. Luckily, my parents understood that if I was going to be truly successful at something, I had to truly enjoy what I was doing so they were supportive of my choices. The most important thing was that whatever it was I chose to do, I would have the self-discipline to work hard and succeed. I ended up entering a special major called Philosophy, Politics, and Economics which was really an incredible experience. Every week we would read four to five books, write 15 page essays, and debate our positions. My major only had 12 students and you had to apply to get in, so we got to know each other very well and our discussions were very intense. In addition to that, I took a lot of classes on literature, art, film, and philosophy, which I enjoyed immensely. In the end, however, I thought that I’d need to get a real job, so I picked investment banking. Back then, even though I made experimental films and made music, I never really entertained the idea of really becoming an artist.<\/p>\n

HLC: Beside your major profession, you are interested in making films. How this came up to you?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: My parents wouldn’t let us watch TV so instead I would spend hours and hours every day reading books, and that’s how\u00a0I fell in love with stories. Once a week though, we would get to go over to our cousins house and I’d be glued to the TV watching movies because I never got to watch them. It was like magic how I could escape into another world and actually see things in a way that’s different from reading a book, and I think that’s what made me interested in the visual aspect. So I guess I’ve always been interested in the arts, but it took many years before this grew into something that I’d actually make sacrifices for. Working 100 hour weeks at an investment bank made me question what life was really about, and I decided it wasn’t just about money and that I was still young so I should just go after what I really cared about. So I quit to make films.<\/p>\n

HLC: Will you try your best to make your dream come true at any price? I mean the movies. Or you still devote to your main career?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: Most emerging writers and directors have day jobs just like I do, though their day jobs may be different. Training The Street is a great place to work because it allows me to work on my writing and my films.<\/p>\n

HLC: What is your first master piece? in what year?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: My first film is called “Yes, Yesterday”<\/em> and it’s a short film about a chance meeting between a man and a girl from his past. It has done extremely well, premiering at Slamdance Film Festival in 2010, which is one of the top festivals in the US. It was also selected for the San Francisco Asian American Film Festival, which is the biggest asian american festival in the US, and has since played at a number of other festivals, including the New York United FIlm Festival where it won the Jury Prize from the critics along with the audience award.<\/p>\n

HLC: What are the advantages\/disavantages when you produce the film?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: Making films is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. When I was an investment banker, I would regularly work 80 hours in a week and not sleep for several days. That was actually easy compared to what I went through to make Yes, Yesterday. During the actual shoot, I worked just as many hours, but the stress was much more intense because the everything was on my shoulders. If we didn’t get a permit for a last minute location change or if someone didn’t show up on time with the right equipment, it was my film that would suffer.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever worked on. It’s hard to describe the feeling you get when you surprise yourself creatively, like when you come up with a new idea, or think of a new image, or make a new cut to the film,\u00a0 but it’s really an incredible and exhilarating feeling. That feeling of wonder and amazement is one of the reason I make films and makes everything else worth it.<\/p>\n

HLC: About “Yes, Yesterday”, when did\u00a0the idea come to you? How you plan to produce?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: The film is really about the momentary and fleeting connections that people make, and the memory of those rare moments. I was trying to capture a feeling more than anything – the feeling you get when you know something is going to end so you try to make it last as long as possible, and I find I get these feelings from the simplest things, like taking a walk with someone before you tell them good bye.<\/p>\n

HLC: Did you hope to to win a prize when you entered the film contest? Did you think you would win the first prize? And after you did win, how did you feel?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: You have about the same chance of being admitted into the top colleges as you have getting into a festival such as Slamdance, so even just getting accepted made me very happy. Winning those prizes at the New York United Film Festival really made me feel appreciated and gave me strength to continue trying to make films. But I also recognize that this is really just the beginning of my journey, and that if I’m going to keep doing this I have to appreciate the creative process, and not just the rewards at the end.<\/p>\n

HLC: What are you planning after \u201cYes, Yesterday\u201d?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: I’m in the middle of writing my next film! I would tell you more, but I don’t like to talk about my work until it is finished. When I have the final script I’ll be sure to tell you more about it!<\/p>\n

HLC: Do you have any though about Vietnam today and in future? Do you think you should contribute to the noble cause to restore Democracy and Freedom to your motherland? Or do you just want to live an American life with your good job and continue to make movies as your hobby?<\/strong><\/strong>
\nVTV: I really believe that the best way to create change is through emotion. As a philosophy major I would have theoretical arguments that would last for hours and opinions would never change despite how strong my logic was. This is because in those types of situations, the objective is to win, not to understand. The key to getting someone to actually listen instead of fight, is to speak to their emotions instead of just their logic, and stories are one of the most powerful ways to access emotion. And once they begin to feel, then the change will come from inside, as opposed to you forcing something upon them from the outside. That type of change, while quiet, is profound. Just look at what’s going on in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and many other places in the middle east.<\/p>\n
