HLC: Hello NTK! Please let me know about the speech competitions posted on YouTube?<\/strong>
\nNTK: There are three speeches I did for competitions on YouTube. The topics are self-perception, what does peace mean to me, and education. The one that most people look at on YouTube is the Inspirational speech on Education. This was my most important speech even though I didn\u2019t win. This is my most important speech because after seeing so many parents not spending time with their kids. I gave this speech as a message to the parents to get involve with their children\u2019s education, not blaming the teachers or schools for their failure. The one that I placed first prize is the one about \u201cWhat Does Peace Means to Me?\u201d
\nHLC: Who sponsor the competition? How does the competition operate? Who fund the competition? How do you participate? What\u2019re the requirements to participate?<\/strong>
\nNTK: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People<\/em> (NAACP<\/em>) hosted the contest in Suffolk , VA. They host the contest under the umbrella The Public Speaking Contest – a non-profit organization found by Ms Lauren Davis and funded the contest. The contest is divided into 4 groups depending on your age group. The winner of the groups goes to the final round. The winner of the final round goes to the finale. I was the first place winner of that contest and went to the finale, where I gave the education inspirational speech. The original age requirement to participate was 13 to 19. Later they extended the age from 11 to 19 so I can participate. There is no entry fee for the competition. You register for the competition at www.thepublicspeakingcontest.com<\/a>.
\nHLC: What is the topic for this year? How much time do you have to prepare for the contest?<\/strong>
\nNTK: The topic for the year has a great variety. There are 8 competitions this year, including the finale. I attended 4 of them. There are \u201c Haiti \u201d, \u201cSelf Perception\u201d, \u201cWhat Does Peace Mean to Me?\u201d and \u201cEducation\u201d.
\nI spent about 1 to 4 weeks to research, write, and practice the speech. When not enough time, it gets really hard since I have a lot of homework from school. I would practice any time, any where I can get my chance. For example, I practice during lunch, on the bus, while I eat breakfast, in the van to places (blockbuster, Giant, weekend activities).
\nHLC: How many times have you competed? Because I see you look very confident and mature, were you nervous the first time? <\/strong>
\nNTK: I have done a lot of competitions in Swimming, Chess, Wushu, Taekwondo, but this is the first year I compete in public speaking. I competed four times in speaking. However, I had three years in public speaking training with Young Speakers Club (www.youngspeakersclub.net<\/a> ) where I do roughly one speech per week.
\nHLC: When the host announced the name of winner from bottom to top, how do you feel? What went through your mind? Do you think you will win the first place?<\/strong>
\nNTK: There I was, sitting on the chair. My dad leaned over and said good job. When the host said that the judges had the final results I sat up straight and listened very closely. The host pulled out the names slowly. I can feel everyone in the room tense listening for the final results. The host pulled out the fourth placed winner. It wasn\u2019t me, I took a deep breath. The judge slowly pulled out the second. The first word out was \u201cMr.\u201d I tensed up and listened. He didn\u2019t say my name. My dad leaned over and said that I won. I looked at him and I could tell that he was serious. The host, the president of VA NAACP Mr. Charles Gates, pulled out the second place card and said \u201cI love this part and remember everyone is a winner\u201d he said the other person\u2019s name, then and only then I knew that I got first place.
\nHLC: Who direct you go into this field? Upon entering, how do you feel? Were you interested and passionate about learning or anything?
\n<\/strong>NTK: Three years ago when I was eight, my father took me to a public speaking class offered at the local recreational center. I did not know anything about this class; I didn\u2019t know anything about public speaking. I just came because my dad said it\u2019s important. When I saw what the class was, I thought this was a good idea because everything I do now will affect my future.<\/p>\n

HLC: Where do you study oration? With whom and what\u2019s the schedule like? <\/strong>
\nNTK: I study public speaking with Young Speakers Club (YSC), a non-profit organization in Fairfax , VA. We have class in a block of 8 weeks session. The class is one hour every week, on either on Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday. After the session, we have a couple of weeks break; the class would start again. There are three levels. I am in last level, which the advance class. We spend more time doing debate, media training, and using speaking equipment. I would repeat the class many times to gain more speaking experience. I also learn a lot from YouTube, watching world champions and trainers.<\/p>\n

HLC: Right now what school do you attend? After school , do you also participate in any activity, such as sports, art? <\/strong>
\nNTK: I am in the Advance Academic Program at Hunters Woods Elementary. I do violin, peacemakers, patrol duty, and chess club in the school. Outside of school hours I practice Taekwondo and Wushu seven hours weekly. I am a black belt candidate in Taekwondo and a green sash in Wushu.
\nI have been swimming competitively since 7 years old. Every summer I swim with Reston Swim Team – Ridge Heights Sharks six days a week.<\/strong> I did two swim-a-thon for fund raising. The last swim-a-thon, I swam 198 laps, which is about 3 miles. My favorite stroke is butterfly.
\nI used to go to Vietnamese school in Saturday at Thang Long. I also did 3 years of acting, and learn portraiture drawing for one year.<\/p>\n

HLC: With ability to speak like that, what do you think is the profession you will follow? <\/strong>
\nNTK: I am still young and still exploring the world. I have not decided on what profession I\u2019ll be studying. I just know that whatever I do, I\u2019ll do my best.
\nHLC: Could you share with friends around your age your methods of learning, how you study and work? <\/strong>
\nNTK: I don\u2019t really have a method of learning. I do use Quizlet a lot. It is flashcard program on the internet that helps me remember facts and study for tests. I also believe in hard work, and don\u2019t quit until you are done with your work. I also believe in open mind, trying new things and taking challenges.<\/p>\n

HLC: What difficulties do you have in learning and what do you do to overcome these difficulties? <\/strong>
\nNTK: I would ask my dad for advices and helps. Parents know best as they have been through things I am facing. My father would sit down and work with me until I understand and overcome the difficulties.<\/p>\n

HLC: Does your family tell you about your origin? And have you thought about do something for the Vietnamese community in the future? <\/strong>
\nNTK: Yes, my parents spoke about how they live in Vietnam , and how my father family attempted to defect Vietnam and went to jail for it. I also have seen pictures of his rundown elementary school, where the local graveyard is the students\u2019 playground.
\nI\u2019ve passed flyers to Vietnamese school in the weekend to encourage Vietnamese kids to do public speaking to have better future. Many of the kids have joined Young Speakers Club, but they normally don\u2019t stay there long. My father has also talked to me a lot about becoming somebody important in the future and making history. I am still young and don\u2019t know all of the details or what I will be doing but I think it has something to do with Vietnam .
